Route 29 Widening Impacts

VDOT Illustration of the widening of Route 29 (Lee Highway)

Clifton Crest residents need to be aware that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is moving forward with a major road project that will impact our community in the coming years. Route 29 (Lee Highway) will be widened from 4 lanes to 6 lanes and have a 10′-wide pedestrian/bike path on either side. This widening will extend from Union Mill Road to Buckley’s Gate Drive (near the Fairfax County Parkway). An aqueduct will be built to carry Little Rocky Run under Lee Highway to prevent the recurring flooding.

Impacts:   In addition to the general impact of the construction, there will be impacts on northbound Clifton Road and southbound Stringfellow Road. In both cases the road will be widened to allow for double (and longer) left turn lanes. Additionally, there is the possibility that a soundwall will be built on the Clifton Crest side of Lee Highway (and elsewhere) to mitigate the noise of increased and closer traffic. That determination will be made during the detailed design phase that is now underway. The HOA is attempting to learn more about this part of the project.
